Supercharge The Rich Text Editor of Your Blog

Posted on November 6, 2008 Filed Under Wordpress

So you want to supercharge the WYSIWYG rich text TinyMCE editor in wordpress? Well than, there is a great plugin that is just for you! With this nice plugin you can do all kinds of trick things to posts and page text with just the press of a button.

The rich text editor that comes default on a standard wordpress install is not really all that bad.

However, I would often find myself doing or adding things to the raw code or in html mode on the editor to get the desired results.. Doing things in the raw code is not a big deal if a person knows html and how to use it well. But we all like to progress and many times people would rather not have to mess around with the raw html code just to make nicely formated and feature rich posts. After all that is what a ‘WYSIWYG’ visual editor is for, right?

This plugin will add all kinds of extra buttons and functions to the default wordpress editor. It makes the Wordpress TinyMCE editor look similar to the image below.

Advanced Editor

Advanced Editor

Notice the Font size and Font family buttons? Those two alone make this plugin well worth installing. Plus all the other trick features it adds. Things like adding tables to posts, using inline css styles, a spell checker, find and replace words and more cool stuff too. Like adding captions to words in the text like this for example! Hover over the word and see a popup tool tip!

I highly recommend adding this plugin to your wordpress blog editor. The TinyMCE Advanced plugin is found at laptoptips.ca. The developer did a wonderful job making the plugin and also has a great website with other nice plugins to offer as well.

I have to say, the TinyMCE Advanced plugin adds some great functions to the default wordpress rich text editor and makes it more efficient and enjoyable to write posts.

Hmmm but how much server CPU resource does it use. And how long do you have to wait if your net connection is bad that day.

I know it’s all the latest thing to have server side software but until we have 99.999% uptime and repsonse times of UNDER 0.1 seconds, I prefer WYSIWYG and anything doing supercharged processing to do it on my machine - the one I don’t share with anyone and that doesn’t have a dodgy copper wire connecting my screen to it (well I hope not)

It is a nice addition to a WP blog. Just takes about 10 minutes to set up, clear the browser cache and after that it works flawlessly.

Did you install the plugin using any automatic installers? I have installed this plugin on about 15 sites now and I noticed that on some of those I had to install the plugin folder manually via FTP for it to work correctly.

Let me know more and I will try to help.. That is a nice blog you have by the way and thanks for coming by my blog.

Plugins tend to slow down blog sites so I avoided these unless I really need a plugin. Though I would have loved having those many buttons when editing.

    Hi,

Yea sure! I can give you a few good quick tips to start off with.

    1) Get rid of the plain vanilla theme and use a nice custom template.. Either find a nice looking free template or have a coder make one that more matches you main root site, with same logo and color. There are millions of templates out in the wild, freely available. Just place ‘wordpress themes’ in google bar and press enter.

    2) Put the main link back to the root page in the sidebar under pages, so it is there on every page. Also put a “Contact” link in the same area, linking to your main contact form, so it is always easy to see how to reach your company.

    3) Add a little more text and or even and image or two to the About Us page.

    4) Make sure you are using the All In One SEO plugin and learn how to use it well. This is a killer plugin and allows much control over unique page meta title, description and keywords.

    5) I would probably use a shorter excerpt on the category pages.. this should just be short one or two paragraph, make searching for specific types of content a little easier when clicking on category links. It also shows more articles main tiles this way above the fold, and person can just scan quickly through them and click title they want to see more of. The excerpt length is often different on other themes from the one you are using. Another good reason to find or make a better theme! There are also nice excerpt plugins that can do all kinds of trick stuff with. Adjust the word length, add picture thumb etc.

Let me know how your progress goes, and thanks for stopping by.

    Have a lot of fun!

I would be glad to help out and give a few pointers.

If you will, just use the form on my contact page and send a note first. Than after I receive that, I will replay back to you with the return email address and we can further converse.

Here is the contact page location!

I do not like to leave my direct email address in text out in that open net for the spam crawlers to read.

This wonderful Plug-in is called TinyMCE Advanced. I have used it since it’s 2.1 version. You can also find the multiple language package of TinyMCE if you are not familiar with English.Plus, it’s all free  .

TinyMCE is a platform independent web based Javascript HTML WYSIWYG editor control released as Open Source under LGPL by Moxiecode Systems AB. It has the ability to convert HTML TEXTAREA fields or other HTML elements to editor instances. TinyMCE is very easy to integrate into other Content Management Systems.

I’m already familiar with the YUI JavaScript library, so when this new feature was included last week’s 2.3 release I decided to try out a progressive commenting enhancement. In this post I’ll walk you through how to implement YUI’s Rich Text Editor on your own blog with comment-specific features.

I’m using it on one of my blogs right now, but the one thing about the plug-in is it has a tendency to screw up spacing…so that’s something to think about.

Learning simple html to edit posts is not a big deal. Sure Supercharge is a huge step-up in terms of intuitivity but it was never a problem for me to just use the provided editor and some html on top of that.

I can’t even explain how much I love learning about new plugins for wordpress. I kind of feel like a kid in a toy store. If I see something cool, I can just take it home and play with it! I think I’ll probably use this one, because while I don’t mind marking up my posts in HTML, sometimes I blog on a lap top and I really hate having to type code on a laptop.

Ha ha… that site is called laptops because the site owner works on laptops.. And also builds plugins for wordpress and is on the development team for wordpress.. You could do more research before wondering such things! If you have your doubts than don’t use it, simple as that! I use it everyday and have not had one issue. That person on the site makes things work better not worst.

Do you even know what wordpress is? Do you even have a website?

    Hi Ryder

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

This sounds like a good product, but I too would be interested to know what your response is to Super Charged’s concerns mentioned above. Is it safe for us to install this? Can you confirm there will be no adware?

Any comments you have on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Rachel,

Yea, it works great for me.. There is no adware in the Editor wordpress plugin… It installs just as any other useful wordpress plugin would. It is an advanced editor and only used by the admin when making a post.. It does not install on a local computer.. Most adware is in the form of .exe or .dll file that runs in background on local unit.. What would the plugin maker gain by adwaring the admin of a wordpress blog? Nothing but some written words, maybe an image or two.. ha ha?

I think the maker of this fine plugin at laptopstips has 100’s of better things to do, especially since he is on the core WP development team. The product is totally safe for my use, as far as I am concerned.

    Have fun!

I really like the What you see is what you get editors, but my only gripe with them, is that you can’t copy/paste directly from Microsoft Word, otherwise it seems to add some gibberish code in the html, which I then have to go and edit. Otherwise I love the WYSIWYG editors!
