Block The Persistent Troll From Making Comments on Blog

The All Night Comment Troll

Recently there was a commenter on the blog that kept leaving a link out to a bad neighborhood. The person would take the time to make a nice decent comment and all. But the link they were dropping was not acceptable by my standards. I do not link out to sketchy web sites from this site! It is just bad mojo and not good for PR, if you catch my drift? On the first blog comment this troll placed, I edited the comment and kindly left a little note in the comment window that said, “Note: Thank you for the nice comment although, I removed your signature link from the comment! It was unacceptable. “

So I went on about my business. Well a day or two later as I was checking comments. I noticed another comment that linked to this same sketchy website. Although this time the anchor text was different. After I noticed this and having remembered leaving the note in the comment, I just deleted the comment this time and went on about my business. Well a day later the blog comment that linked to the same site was there in the blog again.

I decided right then and there that I was going to put up a fence (take some extra measures) to block this troll from making any more comments on the blog. The troll was determined to try and get a link to a certain site from mine! I knew there is way to do this block by using the .htaccess file and adding in a “order allow, deny” statement with an IP address or site domain name. However I than wondered if there were perhaps an easier way to do this? Or thought there should be a way to do this right inside the wordpress admin panel.. Or maybe there is a nice plugin to do this?

Sure Enough! I needed not look any further than right inside the “Discussion” panel area in wordpress. This featurehow to block comments was built right in. The wordpress gurus had this same issue long before me and accommodated their great software with easy measures to rectify the culprit. Right inside the Discussion link from the sidebar there is the Comment Blacklist section and field and using this feature one can block a human from visiting the site. This automatically places the comment in the spam filter. If you have Akismet activated like I do! The comment will never be seen again.

What is nice about this too is how many ways a human can be blocked using this feature. We can enter a word, name, email address, IP or domain name URL in this tool to block any incoming visits that match any parts of the entered critera. This is great because many pesky spammers will naturally use proxy sites to change their IP address.. And these spam heads also sign up and use hundreds of different emails to do their link dropping. Yet many times they only have one or two site URLs that they are trying to plant links to. Here is an example below of how to make the entries on separate lines.

Blog Comment Blacklist

Using the Comment Blacklist those one or two URLs can be easily blocked no matter how many IP or email handles they use. I am happy to report, I never saw that sketchy site link on my blog again.

Important: Be really careful with what words you enter in to be blocked. Because the words used will also be blocked in longer words.. For example, if entered “free” than any comments containing the word “freedom” would be blocked. So you will want to use mostly only unique or full strings for names to block. The words in my example above are just for illustrative purpose. Those are not the words or address I really have entered in my Blacklister. Just be careful what words you enter and put some thought in to the entries. We do not want to block any good comments.

Were they linking to a Last Measure site or something?

Oh and consider yourself luck if a simple IP ban stops them. Most people aren’t stupid enough to fall for that. If you did a range ban instead of an exact IP ban (which likely will never work), then you lose readers by the way.

Ryder reply on March 16th, 2009 5:27 pm:

They were linking to a peer-to-peer network, i.e. pirated software site. Which is not good for keeping a high standing with Google. And yes as mentioned in my post, I was wanting a way to block a site with out blocking any other IP or range of IP’s.. In this case, I was able to block the site by entering in a site name without blocking any other URL’s or IP’s.

What about just adding a captcha code to commenting. That would undoubtedly cut down on automated replies and spam.

Ryder reply on March 16th, 2009 5:12 pm:

Well the issue was mostly with a live human commenter, which would have still got past a captcha.. My Akismet catches and deals with most all of the auto junk on its own. I just needed a way to screen out particular URLs or culprits without hindering the good commenter’s.

Well I for one thank you for any link love you do provide. Obviously, links to questionable content aren’t a great idea but for just about anything else, there’s a give and take that’s readily evident.

The obvious benefit is that you provide some backlink love to the commentor who stops by quality net design.

The not so obvious benefit is that by commenting here, particularly if there happens to be some keyword relevant text in the comment such as something surrounding network design or web design (like how I slipped that in there?) then your site actually grows in content and “value.”

In any event, I agree. Kill the bad links, keep the good ones, particularly when the commentor returns the love a bit by writing on topic content about wordpress or templates or any other keywords you are targetting (oops, i did it again!).

But I keep doing it because like you, I care greatly about the integrity of my comments section. I just read your article and became familiar with the commenter blacklist feature on my blog. This is the best thing that could happen to my blog. I get targeted by spammers constantly and now I have some sort of defense against repeat offenders. Thank you so much for the informative article, keep up the great blogging.

I get these same trolls every once in a while. It’s a little different for me though, it’s their comments. They say nice things and all but it’s not on topic or very acceptable/respectful to others. It’s nearly impossible to insult me, but the things they wrote could easily insult other people. I let them know and they kept doing it.

I also have somebody who keeps posting the SAME thing every time on a bunch of my blog posts. He says “Hello please write back to me” and he doesn’t even have a link in his name. How strange, huh?

my site is hit by persistent pingback comments from splogs. i’m on the fence about deleting them because yes i’m giving them link juice but it’s going to posts that link right back to me and it ensures that google is getting to their site. i’m not sure if google considers splogs to be ‘bad neighborhoods’ or not.

    Any thoughts Ryder?

Ryder reply on May 5th, 2009 6:58 am:

Hi, Well my first thought is that it kind of depends on each site in question linking to.. If the sites in question provide some kind of quality and wholesome content to the user than they are good for linking and get linked back. If the splogs are just total junk and filled with nothing but links and spam affiliate banners? The links are not worth as much that way and might be better finding better links.

My next thought is that, I do not use trackback comments on my site here. I have that code commented out in my template. Mostly just because I do not like the looks of the trackback comments on a blog.. They just make comment area look clogged up and take away from real persons comments.

I do however see lots of prominent bloggers do use them and they do probably help some if the linking is with good sites. But I do not like the looks of them and never have, so I choose to not use them.

I can just look in Awstats and see when google has picked up and recorded any in bound links to me. When I leave comments and or do link building that is how I tell when a link is passing flow.

I am no longer surprised by some people’s behaviour on the internet. Anonimity seems to free them from the constraints of acceptable behaviour – similar I guess to how folk get road rage when seated at the wheel of a car.

Glad to see you managed to find a simple way of blocking them though. For me its another piece of useful info for use when I need it. Thanks.

    1. Commenting without reading the article, just to get a back link.
    2. Commenting on the article with useful insight, but leaving an undesirable link.
Quality bloggers and inbound marketers should always have something unique and interesting to say, rather than taking the easy way out with “nice post!”

You can keep trying and blocking his IP, but unless you have comment moderation on, and physically choose which get posted, you’ll never really stop him. If he wants to post here that badly, he’ll do it.

Ryder reply on July 7th, 2009 9:18 pm:

Yea they might post here again but they will not be able to leave the link out to the same website that I did not like! Because that website name and URL is now entered in the blacklist, it will throw his comment out into spam box land if they try to drop the same link.

I know where you’re coming from. DO FOLLOW blogs operate on a WIN WIN assumption–you win by getting free content, the commenter wins by contributing original comments. The whole arrangement becomes a LOSE WIN when commenters start blasting your blog with pharma, adult, malware, or other links that many mainstream blogs find objectionable. As Stephen Covey said in “7 Habits of Highly Successful People”–think Win win… if you focus on lose win, it will eventually lead to LOSE LOSE for everyone. The blog becomes NO FOLLOW, the commenters lose out. Unfortunately, spammers don’t get this. They don’t realize that their actions eventually will lead to their own promotions jobs getting harder and harder–not just for them but for everyone else. Lose Lose indeed.

Stay positive and don’t let the spammers/mass posters get you down!

Yeah, I agree giving out links and keeping a dofollow is one thing and allowing bad sites to get a link is another. Their keywords and site usually aren’t of good name and may make your site a bit uncomfortable for kids as well. Comments and sites linking should be PG-13.

Its OK to leave a comment and promote your site at the same time but if it is a bad neighborhood site or is deceiving in any way then it is spammed and should be blocked. Anyway nice blog posts…love the info and angle of thought!

Some say that all people view the world in one of two way: people are mostly good, or people are mostly bad. I like to think that people are mostly good.

But how do you decide the linked site is “good” or “bad”? Just the page rank?

I recently saw a comment on another blog which had disgusting anchor text and I didn’t even want to check the website.

But it was on a google groups page so a quick email to google and it was removed

I somehow thoughht this post would be about leaving horrible comments.

I Don’t have many rules on my blogs when it ocms to commenting but I do like to check over all links to make sure they are not leading anywhere ‘dodgy’ before I publish the comment.

At the moment I don’t get that many comments so that isn’t a drain on my time but I shall remember this when I become a popular blogger. :P

Oh and consider yourself luck if a simple IP ban stops them. Most people aren’t stupid enough to fall for that. If you did a range ban instead of an exact IP ban (which likely will never work), then you lose readers by the way.

Unfortunately there is no effective way of doing this. They are all easily worked around. Captcha and comment moderation, and maybe restricting comments to registered users, is about all you can do. Some people say using the Disqus comments system helps. But at the end of the day, comment moderation is the failsafe.

However, you are NOT blocking them from visiting your site as you state. You CAN block them from visiting your site though using “order allow, deny” in .htaccess.
